Around midnight Mike gets hit with whatever it is I have too. All through the night one or other of us is in the loo and when morning comes neither of us have had much sleep. Johanne and Steve have had a bad night too but mainly because Steve had spent loads of time wandering around the boat not knowing where the crackling sounds were coming from. When Mike tells him that it just the fish feeding on the stuff growing on the hulls he can’t believe it. The hulls have never had so little anti foul on so he has never heard it before.

Steve pulls the anchor up. The chain is covered in grey, slimy mud which splatters helpfully all over the deck as it comes up. Lovely. We motor off towards the river – the Rio Paraguacu – and go up it for about 5 miles before reaching the anchorage at Maragojipe.

Photos: Local fishing craft of varying sizes pass us
On the way we pass a few dolphins but they don’t come to play. We are the only yacht there, and the fishing boats come close in as they pass to have a good look at us.
The village of Maragojipe has an incredibly long jetty. The water is shallow for quite a way out and this is obviously how they get to deeper water. This jetty is used a lot by the locals for promenading and jogging. It’s unbelievable how many of them are out jogging in the late afternoon as it’s still really hot and sweaty.
Nurse Sutton continues to nag about the amount I am not drinking (Mike is better at this than me when he’s unwell) but basically takes good care of us – home from home really.
Poor Mike has had to sit and drive the boat feeling vile. At least I have had the relative comfort (albeit a very sweaty comfort) of being able to lie in bed for most of the day. We both still feel very rough although the required visits to the toilet are less frequent. Neither Mike nor I am at all hungry when it comes to an evening meal and Johanne cooks for herself and Steve.
We watch some TV in the evening but Mike and I are conscious that we don’t want to spend too much time cooped up with Johanne and Steve in the same room in case we pass on whatever we have although we still don’t know if it’s a transferrable bug or just as a result from eating or drinking something nasty. We end up going to bed early in the hope that tomorrow we’ll be better.
