Day 63: Chesapeake City to Georgetown - 14/09/12

We wake up to thick fog and my first thought is oh God, are we back in Maine but within a few hours it lifts and by the time we are ready to leave it has disappeared completely.

As usual we motor.  After a few miles, we leave the canal and enter the Chesapeake Bay at the north east end then turn into the Sassafras River and start the winding journey up to Georgetown arriving mid afternoon.

We call ahead to the marina and finding that they have loads of space, we take a nice big slot, Mike backing us in expertly as usual.

Hoping to find a shop of some sort we all go out for a wander around the marina but the shop only has chandlery items, some very tacky clothing and real emergency supplies – Coca Cola, toothpaste etc!  However, the ladies in the shop are very helpful and give us all the info on local shops.

As it turns out that there is nothing in Georgetown except the marina – I don’t even think anyone lives there.  In order to buy a few supplies Terry, Alice and Matt take the bicycles that are available for marina customers to use and go to the only tiny supermarket in Galena, a town a couple of miles away.

While they are gone, Mike, Ann and I walk to the pizza parlour on the other side of the river only to find that it is closed and won’t be open until later so we can’t see if it looks any good.

Everyone except Ann and I go up to the bar for an early evening drink.  Amazingly, both Alice and Matt are asked for ID, incredible since Alice is 23 and poor Matt is 28.  He has to trudge all the way back to the boat for their passports.

We decide to order pizza for delivery from the place in Galena but by the time everyone is back, showered and ready to order, we are told that they can’t deliver for nearly two hours.

We end up going to eat at the Kitty Knight House, the restaurant on the marina premises.  Despite it being our last choice, most of us have a really good meal, especially Mike and I.  As it’s potentially our last meal out together before Alice and Matt leave the boat, Matt treats us all to dinner.

  1. Welcome to the Chesapeake!

(The general rule on ID's is anybody under 30 should be proofed, although some places simply proof everybody. They can get in some serious trouble serving underage people...and 23 is pretty darn close.)
