We wake up to not quite fog but more of a heavy mist and within a few hours it has lifted and I can see my surroundings properly for the first time – very pretty indeed. There are little islands in the harbour and the rocky shores around us are thick with spruce trees. Little boats zoom here, there and everywhere.

Judy gives us the run of her house and car so I go over armed with two loads of washing and while one is in the machine I have a lovely hot shower – and it isn’t a boat one.
I’m backwards and forwards to the boat with the laundry then we take Judy’s car and go out to provision, not just for the trip that we are making with her and Joe but for general stores which I have run down completely.
We fill up a trolley, which costs us considerably less than in the BVIs and drag it all back to the boat before going out to do a little bit of sightseeing.
The main town of Boothbay Harbor is very pretty, with all the tourist shops and restaurants you would expect from such a place. I am amazed by quite how many houses and businesses fly the flag though. Not something we do at home where it has quite different connotations (unless there’s a royal event of some kind). We manage to find Mike some new Sperry boating shoes at a fraction of the price of the same thing in the UK and a pair for me as I have nothing between flip flops and trainers and I don’t want the fashion police getting after me!
Dinner is taken at a seafood restaurant on the front. Not lobster this time but everything else – a selection of appetizers – calamari, shrimp, clams and bacon-wrapped scallops – washed down with a very nice glass of NZ SB. There’s a bit of a mix up with the bill and we don’t get the offer we went in for but to be honest, the scallops were worth it alone!

I just wish we had done the sightseeing bit a little earlier as by the time I get to take all the photos the light is failing. Still, lots more time yet.
When we get back to the house, the weather is closing in. There are some ominous clouds in the sky and flashes of lightning. With thunder rumbles getting closer, we just make it back on board Jeannius when it all passes right overhead, along with wind of 42 knots, but it is short-lived and within half an hour it has passed over.
