Day 149: Niue – 03/06/10

I continue to do the rinsing left over from yesterday’s washing, and just as I finish, having used up all but 24 gallons of water in the tank, the generator fails again but this time, although it starts up, it goes off again after a few minutes.  The situation is getting worse.

Mike gives it a service which makes absolutely no difference, then sits and consults the manuals.  He goes and fiddles with the relays and then it won’t start at all.  Although this is not good it does point to the problem being with the relays.

Charles drops Marie and I at the dock to do a few bits of food shopping while Mike ponders.  We find the supermarket which is more like a small cash and carry, and buy our few bits.  The store has more than a few empty shelves as the huge container is due in tomorrow and quite a lot of the fresh stuff is out of date or not of good quality.  Obviously tomorrow would have been a better day to shop.

When I get back to the boat, the generator is whirring away and Mike has started the watermaker.  We leave it on until we have over 100 gallons then switch it off as Mike doesn’t want the drone of the generator going when we have visitors – we have invited Irene and Dick from Tucanon over for a drink before dinner.  In honour of our visitors, their first time on our boat, and because we have lots of bananas which have all ripened together, I make a banana loaf.

They come over, with a beautiful sunset behind them.

We sit and chat for a couple of hours then they go back to cook for their crew.

They are leaving for Tonga in the morning and we plan to leave tomorrow evening.  Just as they are leaving, Jeannius is hit by a plague of flying ants.  Yuk!  I hate these horrible little creatures.  I remember when they swarmed in our garden at home, Victoria (when young enough to enjoy such things) used to stand over the nest with an electric fly swatter and kill as many as she could.  I wish she was here with that appliance now!!

Once again, we eat shrimp for dinner.  Only one more meal and it will be gone!  Then there’s just the chicken!!
